Overview

Smith Park, located at 4000 Greenbrier, was generously donated to the City by J. Fred Smith.  On April 9, 1942, Mayor Elbert Williams passed an ordinance dedicating the park in honor of the City's first two mayors, J. Fred Smith, who served from 1924 to 1928, and D. G. Smith, who served from 1928 to 1930.

Smith Park is a triangular property nestled across the street from the University Park United Methodist Church and Hyer Elementary School.  Although small in size, it still has plenty of amenities to serve residents.  Extensively renovated in 2009, changes include drainage improvements, new raised botanical beds, new walkway and accessibility improvements, park signage, decorative tree lighting, a plaza area with a flag pole, and new tennis court lighting.  In addition, the park still has enough open space to allow for a friendly game of touch football.

Smith Park Tennis Courts

All courts have fiberglass practice backboards and are lighted for evening play. A push-button switch located on the fence can turn on the tennis lights. A main timer allows the switch to activate from dusk to 10 pm only. Once the switch is pushed, allow 5 to 10 minutes for the bulbs to heat up and light the court. To report lighting problems or net repairs, call the Parks and Recreation Department at 214-987-5488.
