Stormwater Improvement Project Update – Closure of a portion of Hillcrest

July 15, 2021

As mentioned in previous City publications, work is well underway on a multi-year project to upgrade the City’s stormwater system and reduce storm runoff in the neighborhoods near Caruth Park. This construction involves the replacement of existing underground stormwater pipes with large concrete boxes underneath Southwestern and Hillcrest, and it requires the removal of a substantial amount of street surface.

Hillcrest between Bryn Mawr and Greenbrier closed to all traffic

By the end of August, construction is scheduled to be completed for the segment that includes the intersection of Turtle Creek and Southwestern. The installation of the box culverts in the 3400 block of Southwestern is nearing completion. Paving of that block will continue through the fall. Weather permitting, the Hillcrest closures will last for approximately 12 months as work progresses north a block at a time between Southwestern and Colgate. To alert motorists, digital message boards have been positioned on Hillcrest at Northwest Highway and at Lovers Lane. Prior to the start of the 2021-22 school year, the City will work with HPISD to communicate the impact these closures will have on campus populations.

Snider Plaza Area Utility Project – Hillcrest Impacts

The replacement of water and sanitary sewer mains in Hillcrest, between Lovers Lane and Daniel Avenue, is progressing well despite significant weather delays in June. Late this month, traffic will be shifted from the lanes on the east half of the street to the west half. That lane configuration is expected to last for approximately three weeks. Then, traffic will be shifted back to the east half of the street and permanent pavement repairs will be made on the west side of the street. All work in this portion of Hillcrest should be completed by mid-September.
