Active school zones - Kids are back in class

August 22, 2016

Motorists be mindful of active school zones

school zone sign

HPISD students return to campus on August 22.  With school back in session, the streets around the City’s various campuses will be more congested.  The police department reminds motorists that active school zones are designated by flashing yellow lights.

  • 20 MPH is the speed limit in active school zones
  • Cell phone use and texting is prohibited in active school zones (hands-free cell use is allowed)

School zone times in University Park are:  7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Hyer and U.P. Elementary, 7:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Intermediate and Middle School campus, and 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the High School.

Parents, please make sure that your children use the sidewalks when either walking or riding their bikes to school. Children should follow the directions of the crossing guard, who will make sure they cross safely.  Early in the school year, UPPD will have extra officers watching queing lanes at the elementary and intermediate/middle school campuses.

Portion of McFarlin remains closed

McFarlin Blvd. remains closed to traffic from Park to Haynie.  This will continue to impact motorists who approach the Intermediate/Middle School campus from the west. Weather permitting, the McFarlin Bridge project will be completed, and the street will reopen, in October
