Back to school reminders

September 11, 2017

HPISD students have returned to campus.  With school back in session, the streets around the City’s various campuses are more congested.  UPPD reminds motorists that active school zones are designated by flashing yellow lights.

School zone times in University Park are:

7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Hyer, U.P. Elementary (*still active) and Campus #5
7:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Intermediate/Middle School campus
7:30 to 8:15 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the High School.

New law on texting and driving - September 1

On September 1, a new state law goes into effect.  From that date on, drives cannot use a wireless device (cell phone) to read, write, or send an electronic message while operating a motor vehicle unless the vehicle is stopped.  Please note, when driving through an active school zone you can still talk on the phone, but only with the use of a “hands free” device.

Parents, please make sure your children use the sidewalks when either walking or riding their bikes to school. Children should follow the directions of the crossing guard, who will make sure they cross safely.  Early in the school year, UPPD will have extra officers watching queuing lanes at the elementary and intermediate/middle school campuses and other high traffic areas.

Campus construction projects

Throughout this school year, normal school-day traffic patterns will be disrupted.  UP Elementary School students will travel to HPISDs new campus next to Northway Christian Church as their campus on Lovers Lane is rebuilt.  In University Park, building additions are also on tap for the existing Intermediate/Middle School and High School campuses.

Intermediate/Middle School construction

This project will start with work on the tennis courts, followed by an underground parking garage. Eventually it involves additions to the school.  The District, City and Town of Highland Park understand that parking and traffic will be a significant challenge throughout the school year.  Your patience is requested during this time period as we work together to ensure the safety of students, campus staff and parents.
