Traffic Operations

The Traffic Operations Division is responsible for the following operations and maintenance services:

  • Signage and pavement markings (both paint and thermoplastic)
  • Traffic signals and City-owned decorative street lights
  • Parking signage

Note: The Traffic Operations Division maintains the decorative "antique" street lamps along Hillcrest, Snider Plaza, Preston, and Lovers Lane.  All other streetlights in University Park are owned and maintained by Oncor Electric Delivery.  To report an inoperative street light that is owned and maintained by Oncor call 888-313-4747.  Or, if you would like to go online to report the outage, go to: www.oncorstreetlight.com

Parking restrictions on the City's streets are established by Ordinance.  The Traffic Operations Division installs all parking signs in compliance with the latest edition of the Manual of Traffic Control Devices, http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov.

The Traffic Operations Division installs pavement markings (paint and thermoplastic) throughout the community in compliance with the latest edition of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Examples of this work include crosswalks, stop bars, curb markings, and travel lane markings. 


To Report a Problem


All damaged traffic signals should be reported immediately to the University Park Police Department by dialing 9-1-1 or 214.363.3000.


How do I get parking restrictions on my block?

A written petition from a majority of the property owners along both sides of the street should be forwarded to the Director of Public Works at City Hall - 3800 University Blvd, University Park, TX 75205. The request should describe the requested restriction (i.e., No Parking, 2-Hour - Weekdays / 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and etc). Any parking change requires City Council action.



How do I report a damaged traffic signal, school zone flasher, or a regulatory sign (i.e., stop sign)?

You should contact the Police Department at 214-363-3000 immediately.


Why doesn't the "Walk" pedestrian light at signalized intersections stay on long enough for me to cross the street?

The "Walk" light should only stay on for about 4 to 6 seconds, and should provide notice to the pedestrian that it is safe to cross the street. After 4 to 6 seconds, the light should change to a "Flashing Don't Walk" for several seconds, before a "Solid Don't Walk" light is seen. The three combined lights should provide more than adequate time for pedestrians to cross the street safely.


How do I get a stop sign installed at an intersection?

A request should be forwarded to the City (call 214-987-5400) for the subject intersection. An independent traffic-consulting engineer will then determine whether site conditions, as defined in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, are sufficient to install the requested sign.


Will the City install speed humps in the street along my block?

The City Council policy is that speed humps will NOT be installed on streets within University Park.


Will the City install speed humps in my alley?

Yes. A written petition detailing the request from a majority of the property owners on both sides of the alley should be forwarded to the Director of Public Works at City Hall - 3800 University Blvd, University Park, TX 75205.


If I have a problem with visibility at the intersection of my alley with the street, what can I do?

You may request (call 214-987-5430) that the City install a convex mirror at the subject location to enhance your ability to see pedestrians or oncoming vehicles.


Will the City close my street for a block party?

Yes (except on Halloween). Please contact the Traffic Division at 214-987-5430.  To download a Block Party request form, click here.


Does the City install "Children at Play" signs?

The City does NOT install "Children at Play" signs, because they are not approved by the latest edition of the Manual of Traffic Control Devices, they provide a false sense of security, and there is no evidence that drivers heed the signs.
